The History of

The Caroline House

In the 1850s, John E. Shelton, a master craftsman, purchased the land and existing buildings. He built the main house for his friend and partner Thomas Wesley Smith, a cigar manufacturer. Smith and his heirs continued to own the property until 1924. It was then sold to the Thomas A. Gay family 1924-1970 and the  Whisenant family 1970 through 2000.

Ms. Eckhart purchased the property in 2000 and fully restored the home and buildings. She opened The Caroline House in 2006 as a Bed and Breakfast.

The Experience

Upon your arrival, you are greeted with a wine and cheese board served in the afternoons between 4 PM and 6 PM in the back yard during optimum weather days or in the main house, often with wine from Texas wineries.  Let us know if you wish this service at the time of booking.

You can relax in your rooms, enjoy the common rooms of the house or stroll the grounds of the one acre, park-like setting.

Feel free to wander into downtown Montgomery, just two short blocks away to enjoy the local restaurants, antique stores and boutiques. If you bring your dog, Cedar Brake Park is a few steps from the bed and breakfast.

There are other sites within a comfortable walk from The Caroline House, or you can hop in your car to explore Lake Conroe's water sports, several public golf courses, the Renaissance Festival or even hiking and biking the nearby Sam Houston National Forest.

Return for a quiet, restful evening and  peaceful sleep.

Guest access

Guests have access to all green spaces, to play games (croquet, soccer, football), or just sit and relax. There are always cards, puzzles, and plenty of reading material in the common areas.

Interaction with guests

Mary lives in the historic Main House and is usually on the premises to greet all the guests. She loves to visit with everyone, but it is her policy to give each guest  space, if privacy is preferred.

Refreshments are provided in the afternoon, and sometimes a fresh-baked dessert is served later in the evening. A full breakfast is served in the Main dining room between 8 AM and 10 AM.
